It's October already...

Lance turned 25 this past week and Maggie turned 3. Time is flying.
October means that the next month is NOVEMBER which means boards. I really am going to crack down and REALLY study instead of just reading my review book. October is also the month I decided to apply for jobs. Wish me luck!

Our group finished and turned in our masters project and I am so excited to be DONE with that. We only have a presentation at the end of the month.

We have been attending all the home Aggie football games and let me just lett you that it is going to be a LOOOOONG season. We missed the first game because we flew to Las Cruces last minute to see Lance's grandma. We were very glad we saw her that week because she passed away only a short week later. We were glad we got to see her one more time. We brought Maggie with us and she just loved on grandma. It was too sweet.

I made a Halloween wreath and have it hanging on our front door. I think it looks pretty cute. We will get LOTS of trick-or-treaters this year and I am kinda excited about that.

I'll try to update more, but who knows if I really will. I use my iphone instead of a computer these days!

AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-27412022015200882552010-08-10T11:28:00.002-05:002010-08-10T11:39:34.304-05:00Summer 2010Since rotations have been over I have been able to slow down and somewhat enjoy my summer. Lance has been flying back and forth to New Jersey probably 5-6 times this summer. I am waiting the day that I get to go with him. I would love to go tour New York.

My mom and sister came in to visit me, Lance, and my other sister that has been staying with us all summer for her internship. We went to the downtown aquarium, the mueseum of natural scence, and NASA. Of course not everything went off without a hitch. I want to the ER for lower right quardrant abdominal pain. Thank goodness it wasn't appendicitis, but I did have a 4 cm cyst on my right ovary. Everything is fine, I just need to get a follow up ultrasound in about a month now. We were going to take Lance to the airport at 4:00 that day, but I was still in the ER at that time so he didn't go to New Jersey that trip. Also my mom's car was leaking transmission fluid so she had to get that fixed. We still had lots of fun and ate lots of good food including the Cheesecake Factory. yummm

We went to Longview a couple of weeks ago and got to go to the balloon glow and saw Kevin Fowler. It was a lot of fun and it was much more crowded since the last time I went to the balloon glow. I think I went 7-8 years ago. It is hard to believe it was really that long ago!

My group and I are trying to finish our research. We are SO over it! I just want to get it done. We are actually going out on a saturday to try and get more surveys filled out.

That's about it. I'll try and do better about updating. Since I got my iphone, I hardly get on my laptop. I just use the iphone and I haven't figured out how to update from there.

AdiosAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-79954591023856462162010-07-02T12:21:00.002-05:002010-07-02T12:36:36.507-05:00SUNSCREEN!

I am taking this space up on my blog to remind everyone to wear their sunscreen. I know 2 girls under the age of 25 who have been diagnosed with melanoma. This makes me more aware of my moles and my skin. When looking for sunscreen, look for spf 30 and higher. My new favorite sunscreen is this tropical smelling Hawaiian tropic spf 50 sunscreen. It goes on clear and smells great.

Be sure to reapply every couple of hours. After your time in the sun, use this great smelling after sun lotion. It is very creamy and smells tropical. Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-56313546942510765402010-06-29T20:07:00.002-05:002010-06-29T20:18:18.573-05:00whoopshaven't updated in a while!
I have officially finished my clinical rotations!!! WOO HOO! I was so excited the second I finished that last final. Now I am to work on a resume and finish my research. Next on the plate is taking my boards, finding a job and graduating in December.

With all this time on my hands, I (and Lance) have started the South Beach Diet. We eat 2 whole cups of veggies with lunch and dinner. We eat 1/4c of veggies with breakfast. The only thing I have figured out for breakfast is eggbeaters with sauted bell peppers and onion. Kind of getting sick of the same breakfast everyday. We have been on it a week and a half and have not had any sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, fruit, etc. Just lean protein, veggies, and sugar free popsicles! LOL we eat a little more variety than that, but not much.

Lance goes to New Jersey again next week. I am hoping to join his sometime this summer on one of his trips. I REALLY want to join him sometime in November or December so we can go to New York during Christmas time. I think that would be so neat. With all the traveling Lance does he has enough mile to fly me to New York and right now only enough hotel points to stay like one extra night in New York. The hotels there are so expensive!

For Independence Day we will be in Longview. We have plans to go to Fiesta Texas for a weekend. Since Lance controls our weekens in the fall (fighting Texas Aggie football) I decided that I should pick something I wanted to do during the summer.

Until next time.
AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-48966093805930886602010-05-10T08:20:00.003-05:002010-05-10T08:31:14.198-05:00wow May!I am sorry for my lack of updates. We have been BUSY! We left our one bedroom apartment and moved into a 3 bedroom townhouse! We couldn't be more excited! We have only been home one weekend since moving in so there is still lots of stuff that need to be put away. Maggie loves her new backyard! She will stay outside for hours bathing in the sun. She also loves taking walks around our new neighborhood. I enjoy this too. There is a water retention pond with a fountain in the neigborhood that has a trail you can walk around. I bought Rebok Easy Tones with my birthday money and have been getting quite a bit of use out of them.

I finished up my general surgery rotation with the TDC. That was definately an experience. Between getting patted down every day, one of the prisoners trying to steal my pen, a screaming surgeon that throws things (yes, even a scalpal) I survived! I actually thrived. I was with 2 other med students and the surgeon called me the star student more than once. He kicked one med student out of the OR because he didn't get the answer to a question right, and when he asked me and I knew, he told me I needed to scrub in and the other student needed to spend time at the library. On the last day he told me I did a great job and if I ever needed a reference he would be glad to write me a letter. I was thinking in my head that I would NEVER get a letter from an irratic screaming surgeon; who know what he would write. Anyway, I am glad I don't have to see 4 in the morning in a while.

My current rotation is in College Station ER. It has been fun. I worked all weekend, so today is like my friday. Lance will be going to a resort for work and I get to tag along!! I don't care if I will be bored all day. I will be happy to be doing nothing but sitting by the pool!

In other news, it will be our 2nd Wedding Anniversary on the 17th! I cannot believe how time flies! I am excited about the things to come in the next year of marriage because I will be graduating and getting a job. Maybe we will finally get to spend our weekends together!

Maybe I will get some pictures of the townhouse on here as soon as things get put away and I take pictures!Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-77732398016577343682010-03-07T13:55:00.002-06:002010-03-07T14:15:59.990-06:00MarchI guess since it seems that I only update once a month I will title this post March. Last month I was in Anahuac doing a family practice rotation. I really enjoyed it because I worked in the clinic Monday-Friday but also was on call for the ER Monday and Wednesday night. I got to do a whole lot and had lots of experiences in that month. My next rotation is my last family practice rotation in LaPorte, which is very close to home!
Lance is currently snowboarding in Colorado! He is working very hard on a project in Denver and took a day off to enjoy being in Colorado. He will be home on Wednesday, then Saturday he is flying out to Las Cruces to visit his grandmother. I am unsure of my schedule yet so I haven't gotten plane tickets or anything. Maybe I will be able to go.

I can't believe I have only 4 more months of rotations. I am scared at how soon Lance and I will have to figure out where we are moving to and pack up to move to a new location. Uncertainty always mkes me nervous. Last time I was this nervous was when I was waiting for interviews for PA school and Lance bought me Maggie! She has been such a comfort. We both love her a little too much!

I guess that is all for now. Hopefully we will make it to the Houston Rodeo this year! I loved going last year.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-87141611762879009772010-02-06T08:41:00.003-06:002010-02-06T08:51:13.514-06:00Bad Blogger
Sorry I haven't updated in a while! I have been in Tyler doing a rotation in internal medicine. I loved it! Igot to do quite a bit of procedures and felt I did really well on the rotation. I don't feel SO clueles all the time! haha!

Last night Lance and I had a date night and went to Chabucas. It is a brazilian place. It was so good. They had a man playing the piano and amazing food and drinks. It was a much needed time spent together. Today we just plan to get groceries, start doing taxes, and run some errands. Our only plans for the super bowl are just to hang out at home.

I have a product rave to do. I wanted to whiten my teeth, but I feel that the crest white strips and andy other strips are a pain. You have to keep them on for 30 minutes, and then I always have to brush my teeth afterwards. I found this product at Sephora. You just put it on your teeth twice a day. You don't have to brush your teeth afterwards and it freshens you breath too! The packaging says to wait to appy 1 hour after brushin your teeth and don't apply 30 minutes before or after eating. So I just kept this little pen in my purse and whitened my teeth whenever I remembered, or whenever I wanted fresher breath. So here it is:

BriteSmile To Go Accelerator pen

Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-31859350225183360452010-01-10T07:25:00.002-06:002010-01-10T07:30:01.603-06:00back to the grindI am about to head out to leave to Longview. I will be there about a month. My rotation is in Tyler so I will be driving there everyday. It is actually less distance and time than any of my Houston rotations! Lance is keeping Maggie this first week and then visiting me in Longview for the weekend. The next week he is heading to New Jersey for some meetings. I think this rotation will go by faster than my other one and I really think I will enjoy it. I spoke to the PA on the phone the other day and it just seems like this will be a great rotation.
Sorry I haven't even updated about Christmas or anything. I was having too much fun enjoing myself on vacation. We had a wonderful Christmas spent with family in Longview. The weekend before Christmas we were in El Paso spending time with Lance's grandma. We did not do anything for New Years and if you know me you know that I did not make it until midnight!
Oh, and I am loving my Wii fit. I get on it everyday and I enjoy the Biggest Loser game. IT really helps out because it is SO cold outside right now!
adios for now!Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-77295241274775368322009-12-17T11:05:00.006-06:002009-12-17T11:30:18.101-06:00Winter Park, Colorado So, I have obviously finished my pediatrics rotation! yay! I am officially on Christmas break. The day of my final I flew to Colorado to meet Lance for the weekend. He was having some meetings in Denver. We went to Winter Park Colorado and really enjoyed skiing and the snow! The first day we took a skiing class and we quickly got promoted, so we got to go further up the mountain with the instructer. The next day we skiied on our own and had a ton of fun! Here, just look at the pictures!!!

Lance waiting for the bus

And I played in the snow

My favorite picture! It was a much needed vacation together after we had been living apart due to my rotations for 6 weeks! It was only from Thursday to Sunday, but we made the most of it and had a blast skiing together. I will always laugh when I think of Lance going to fast that he skiied into the woods and fell in the soft snow. I enjoy making memories with Lance and maybe someday we will make memories in Winter Park with our kids.

-Amy

Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-19996781872583705132009-11-08T20:00:00.004-06:002009-11-08T20:09:24.254-06:00pediSo, I am officially in Longview for my pediatrics rotation. By the end of the week I was sick. I am surprised I lasted that long with all the kids that cough all over me. It has been fun and many people recognize me, which is kinda weird. Oh by the way, the pediatrician I am working with was Lance's pediatrician since he was a baby. Pretty weird, huh?

Saturday morning I made the long drive back to Houston to hang out with Lance. It was nice, but would have been much better if I wasn't sick. I was there a whole whopping 20 hours before having to return to Longview. Lance will be coming to Longview this weekend. We are going to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday.

Nothing else really going on in our lives. I'll leave you with a picture that is on my computer that I left here at home after getting married.Maggie is ready for Christmas!!!!!Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-1940868880179744622009-10-26T11:33:00.003-05:002009-10-26T11:53:32.250-05:00End of OB/GYNSo I haven't updated in a while. The weekend before last we went to Marble Falls for a friend's wedding. It was beautiful out there! Lance and I went to Fredricksburg for the day and enjoyed the town. We also went to the famous Luckenbach, TX. It was so neat. It is seriously a small loop with a post office and a dance hall. That is it. Oh, and you buy beer at the post office! It is so neat. I will try and upload some pictures. The wedding was beautiful on the lake there, and we wish Aimee and Trey many wonderful years together.
On a totally different note, I delivered 2 babies last night!!! It was an awesome experience and I am so glad I was able to do that. They were delivered both within the first hour I was there, and then I studied the rest of the night waiting on more babies, but no more came. Lance knew I was going to have a hard time with the night shift, so I woke up to leave and he had a dozen roses, cinamon rolls, and a coke waiting for me. I actually was pretty awake all night. Maybe it was the adrenaline rush!Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-1578258502080674102009-10-08T12:45:00.002-05:002009-10-08T12:52:21.903-05:00bath tub=waterNow that it is more than halfway through the week, I thought I should write something. I decided to stay home from the game this weekend to work on my research paper. Hopefully I will get most or all of it done and not have to worry about it for the rest of this rotation.

Maggie has been funny lately. She would go over to the bath tub and start crying. Lance figured out that she wanted her water bowl filled, even though her water bowl isn't anywhere near the tub. Then yesterday she sat by the tub and cried so I checked her water bowl and sure enough she was out of water. She normally sits by her water bowl when she wants more water. oh well, I guess she is smart because she knows water comes out of the tub faucet.

I am on my lunch break right now. I have felt lots of babies in utero today. It is fun for the most part and exciting for the patient when I find the fetal heart rate and they get to listen to their baby. 98% of patients here speak spanish so I have been picking up more and more phrases.

Until next update,
AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-6453783233166189882009-09-27T19:13:00.004-05:002009-09-27T19:23:10.992-05:0024

Lance's birthday is Wednesday. He will be 24; one year away from 25-quarter of a century. Man, he's old. haha. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LANCE! I am so happy you are my husband and happy to celebrate another year with you! Hope it is the best year yet!

Yay! Another Aggie win. It might just be the last win. haha. We had fun. Ob/gyn is going well. I think I might be tired of it by the end of these 5 weeks, but then I get to do labor and delivery and that will definately be a new experience. I am definetly excited about the hours I work- 8-3. : ) Can't beat that!!! I have over an hour drive to Katy and back, though but I don't mind being HOME BY 5!!!! Especially after my first rotation of 7am to 9pm!!
That is all. We didn't take any pictures this weekend and I know I haven't posted pictures of last weekend, I just have better things to do like laundry right now.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-41269018951573592942009-09-18T12:30:00.003-05:002009-09-18T12:42:06.493-05:00another tailgate tomorrow

YAY! I am officially done with block 1 of my rotations!!! Next is ob/gyn..... I am enjoying this friday off. Lance and I are going to a game night with his coworkers tonight and tomorrow is fighting Texas Aggie Football. I think it is fun to go and tailgate and this time I will take pictures. Yesterday Lance and I went out after dinner for some retail therapy! haha He has been going into work very early and working hard and I just finished my first block. I got a dress and shoes for a wedding in october and of course Lance got Aggie shirts. TJ Maxx was our best friend last night.

I wanted to get my hair cut today, but didn't exactly know what I wanted so I decided to wait. I don't want it short or anything. I also can see my pesky grey hairs and I am not sure what to do about that. I am 23 for goodness sake, am I supposed to be worrying about grey hair??? Anyway, I think there are only like 6 of them, but they stick out like a sore thumb in my dark brown hair. I just part my hair on the opposite side of my head for now!

Look for pictures from the tailgate.
Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-7258480792544405142009-09-06T19:47:00.002-05:002009-09-06T19:58:32.511-05:00Aggie football season is here!Lance and I had a great time in College Station this past weekend. We always love going back to A&M and just walking around campus. Sadly, we brought the camera but didn't take any pictures. We decided to tailgate and had brisket, ribs, beans, corn casserole, and sweets. It was nice outside and we enjoyed chilling before the game. On the 19th we plan to tailgate again, but make something that doesn't take so long to cook. We will probably to hotdogs and hamburgers. We spent the night with my sister and went to church at A&M Church of Christ. We missed the church that we went to throughout college. We also did our premarital counseling there.

Thank goodness we both have labor day off and can do our grocery shopping for the week tomorrow and rest before our work week begins. I have a final in about a week and a half and I REALLY have to buckle down and study. I can't believe my first block of rotations is almost over. I am enjoying my current rotation and the freedom that it brings. I also like the interesting adn complicated cases that it brings. I also have done about 25 nasal swabs that came back positive for the flu, so I am bound to catch it. Good thing some places now have the flu shot out. I need to go get one.

After finally losing some of my "I am in PA school and all I do is sit on my butt and study" weight, I really pigged out this weekend!! oh well, I'll get back on my diet and back to working out. I still have quite a few pounds to lose. I am glad I was finally able to lose some weight at all. Lance has been working out too and doing the P90X. So, we will see in 3 months how that plays out!Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-61943474546306486132009-08-29T09:30:00.003-05:002009-08-29T09:43:44.928-05:00downtownExciting news- Lance is now full time downtown. He is excited for the projects it could bring, but he has been working longer hours. I know he will also miss his work buddies. I am proud of him and I know he is excited to do something new. He is also getting excited for A&M football. We will be at the first home game next week. I plan to see my sister for a little bit of the time. She doesn't like football and works at the bookstore during the football games. We were excited to get Maggie back after her being gone for 3 weeks!!! We missed her.

The past week I was at my rotation with the Galveston County Health District. I have gotten to see some interesting things and my preceptor lets me do almost anything. The PAs there also have to act as social workers because the patients don't have insurance. The patients also can't get refered to specialists so the PAs there have to handle everything. We saw a 19 year old guy that shot himself in the face. He no longer had a nose and he couldn't see. Also, there are some STD cases as well as telling people they have HIV. I have also done lots of pap smears and taking stiches out and such. Most of the cases are emotionally tough and there is lots of patient education and counseling. I have learned lots in my first week and am excited to go back. At the end of this rotation I have a big final. I have been studying the cases I have seen, but I am not really sure how to approach studying for this final.

Hopefully I will update next weekend! See yaAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-24515953185397998692009-08-19T11:43:00.003-05:002009-08-19T11:53:14.801-05:008-19-09Hello all!
I just finished my rotation in Bay City. I stayed at free housing in West Columbia, a tiny town. I am so happy to sleep in my own bed. I did not sleep well there at all. There wasn't a deadbolt on the door and the front door was so thin and cracked you could see through it. I wish I didn't look under the kitchen sink, because I found mouse droppings. The place was disgusting, but hey it was free and it is now over with!!! I also went three weeks without television. I didn't really miss it at all; I got lots of studying done.

My rotation was in internal medicine. I loved it. I liked seeing the patients again and establishing a relationship with them. I got an awesome evaluation from the doctor and he even told me to call him when I get out of school for a job!!!!! He said the patients loved me! I don't think I could convince Lance to move out to Bay City, though! Tomorrow I turn in my paper on transient ischemic attacks and listen to presentations by other students.

My next rotation is with the Galveston County Health Department. I will be happy to be at home. I plan to exercise and eat well and hopefully lose a couple pounds.

Lance flew back to New Jersey this week. He will be back Thursday night because we have to travel to Longview and attend a wedding in Louisiana on Saturday. I hope the next time he goes to New Jersey I will be able to go up there for the weekend and visit New York City. I think it would be so much fun!

AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-51702520477585162802009-08-10T09:56:00.002-05:002009-08-10T10:06:47.117-05:00west pointThis past weekend my mom and sisters came to Houston to go shopping. We had fun and got some good deals. We had to make sure and eat at Gringo's. Lance went to West Point and sent me pictures. It looked so green there and pretty. He is enjoying being in New Jersey, and I know he wished I could have visited him this past weekend in New Jersey. I only have a week and a half left in this rotation and Lance should be back this weekend.

I think I am coming down with whatever Lance came down with a couple of weeks ago. Believe it or not, but Nasonex really works. I hate spraying that up my nose, though.

Anyway, this is just a quick update.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-71155193940788038952009-08-02T15:50:00.002-05:002009-08-02T16:07:59.992-05:00flying byLife is starting to go by fast! Lance just got offered a different position at work, where he will be workin on a project that is in New Jersey. He was told on Friday, and this week he is flying out to New Jersey for a week and a half. I am so excited for him. He will also be working 2-3 days a week where he is now, and 2-3 days a week at a company downtown. He is excited to do something new and different. I don't think there could be a better time for him to take this opportunity because I am out of town for this whole month too. We just have to give away our Maggie for 3 weeks! I will miss Lance and Maggie!

I just finished my first week in Bay City and boy do I have stories! At first I felt pretty lonely out there because it is a small town and everybody knows everybody else. Every patient I see asks me where I am from. My preceptor is also the sheriff of the county and has the attack dog in his office. The first day when I walked in his office he was standing in front of the cage and told me not to look directly into his eyes. It was a little disturbing. Now, I am used to it. Everyone talks about their guns and 'so and so down the road.' I also see patients that were trampled by a bull and I have seen some nasty dog bites. Now that I am getting to know people I am enjoying chit chatting while I am doing their history and physical. They are so friendly.

I am also living in an OLD house in an even smaller town about 35 minutes from Bay City. There is no TV and I can get internet sometimes, but it cuts in and out all the time. I get lots of studying done when I get home. The neighbor seems to keep an eye out on the students.

Heres to two weeks without my husband or my dog. I think I will make it.

AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-68236778477683299672009-07-24T16:11:00.002-05:002009-07-24T16:20:09.357-05:00ONE ROTATION DOWN, TEN TO GO!YAY! I have officially finished my first rotation. It is amazing how much you can learn in one month. I plan to take everything I learned in cardiology with me to my next rotation, internal medicine. I am happy to say I got a great evaluation and the Dr. told me I would be an asset to any clinic or hospital I plan to work at. He also said he would be happy to give me a recommendation if I wanted one later on.

My next rotation is in Bay City. I am moving out on Sunday. I am happy that I will be working regular clinic hours and I will be able to come home every weekend. This past rotation I worked 7am to 8 or 9pm, so 8-5 sounds nice. I will also be able to go back and study and work on my paper. I did not feel that I had time to study this past month because I felt sleep was more important!

Everything is going great with Lance. I actually got to go to his work and eat lunch with him. His boss told me that he is doing such a great job and he seemed proud of Lance and the things Lance had done in this past year. I am proud of him too!

Everything is going great. I enjoy interacting with patients and my first rotation proved to me that I have definately picked the right career for me!

AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-8709533569820979712009-07-11T12:13:00.002-05:002009-07-11T12:21:54.109-05:00CardioAnother week of cardiology is done. I am learning a lot, but at times I still feel clueless. I still see patients by myself and report to the physician. I read stacks of EKGs, and at least he is impressed with my EKG reading skills. I have to work on my presentation that I will give in less than 2 weeks. I chose to do my presentation on Atrial Fibrillation because I have seen a couple of patients with it. We were on-call this weekend, but when I called in he said that I didn't need to be there, so I get the weekend off. I am still working from 7 am until 8 or 9pm. I decided I should wear a pedometer and see how far I walk in one day. I probably walk twice as far as needed because I get lost! haha. It would be easier if we only went to one hospital, but we go to two different ones with the cath lab on different floors in each and I get them mixed up.
I only see Lance one hour in the morning when we are both getting ready for our day, and then an hour at night before bed. It has been kinda hard on us. We have to log in the patients we see that day, so I spend some time doing that. I have not been able to study, and that is hard on me. I feel like I could learn so much more if I could read more about the diseases and conditions I see. Next month I will be living in Bay City and I think I am working in a clinic so hopefully I will have plenty of time to study in the evenings.
-AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-11330793298631372512009-07-03T18:09:00.003-05:002009-07-03T18:19:38.069-05:00Absolute ExhaustionI just finished my first week of my first clinical rotation. I have already learned to much. I am with a cardiologist. I show up at 7am at Clear Lake hospital and see patients, then around 11am we go to his office and see patients until around 6pm. We then go into Mainland hospital and see patients until 8-9pm. On the very first day I did not eat breakfast because I was nervous. It was so busy I only had half of a sandwich for lunch and by the time I got home around 9:30 I was so tired I just wanted to go to bed. So all ate the whole day was half a sandwich. I have been eating breakfast before I leave since then.

The very first patient the cardiologists gives me the chart and says, "here you go." I thought he would at least show me how he likes things done. I see the patient, do a history and physical, look up everything about the patient in the computer and come up with the assesment and plan for the patient. The doctor just signs off on my work.

I have got to help in cardioversion, heard every single murmur, bruits, done EKGS, interpreted stacks of EKGs, seen stents and pacemakers placed.
I am also learning about more drugs than we learned about in pharmacology and when to prescribe them.

Overall, I am enjoying my first rotation, but I am SO exhausted from the hours.
Lance took a picture on my first day. My pockets were stuffed with little books to help me out. I will have to post it when I have access to his camera.

AMYAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-77815499400477601722009-06-18T10:55:00.002-05:002009-06-18T11:02:48.918-05:00DONE WITH DIDACTIC YEAR!I just took my last exam of didactic year! yay! I then marched up to my professor's office and turned in our research proposal! Now, I hope I don't cry on my first day of rotations. I am to call the doctor I am with at 6:00 the morning of the first day and ask which hospital to meet him at! I am excited that I (we) have made it to this point. I feel like I know SO much, yet at the same time I feel that I have SO much more to learn.

This past weekend we flew to El Paso to visit Lance's grandmother. We painted the garage doors and some columns on the front of her house so she can sell her house. Lance said he had many good memories in her house and was sad that she was selling it. We ate lots of tamales, chicos tacos, enchiladas, and Lance had lots of menudo. We got back late on Sunday and picked Maggie up. We missed Maggie while we were gone.

Tomorrow we are heading to Longview. My mom had surgery and is recovering so I am going to see if there is anything she needs. Also, we hope to visit my grandparents. I don't know how crazy things will be clinical year and I don't know the next time we will be able to see any of our grandparents.

Lance and I have been reflecting alot lately and have come to the conclusion that we are very proud of the life we are building together. I can think of a better person to be my partner through life!

Later,
AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234972188282099067.post-44528798295946873052009-06-08T14:28:00.002-05:002009-06-08T14:35:17.044-05:00summer funThis past weekend we went to Tomball to swim and attend a graduation party for some friends of Lances. Sunday we went to church and the headed to Galveston to look at the sandcastles. They were neat. I think I could get used to the summer schedule for PA school. Before I know it I will be freaking out on rotations.

This weekend we are flying to El Paso to visit Lance's grandma.
I have an exam Friday before we leave. Hopefully that goes well.
I am trying to finish this research before we leave because the presentation and paper are due when we get back. I am having trouble filling out the IRB form in order for UTMB to approve us for research. It is alot of explaining yourself!

This morning I won a $50 off $100 purchase at Old Navy. I then refreshed the page so I could look for the coupon I really wanted, the $75 off $100 purchase. Little did I know that refreshing the page caused me to lose the coupon. By the time I could go back for the coupon I just lost, they were all gone!! Old Navy has this game you play every week to try and win these coupons. People stayed up all night waiting for the game to come up, and I just happened to be on the page at the time it opened this morning. I can't believe I had the coveted coupon and lost it that easily. Oh well, I guess half of the fun is in the hunt!
-AmyAmyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01158596312253234235noreply@blogger.com0
