Winter Park, Colorado

So, I have obviously finished my pediatrics rotation! yay! I am officially on Christmas break. The day of my final I flew to Colorado to meet Lance for the weekend. He was having some meetings in Denver. We went to Winter Park Colorado and really enjoyed skiing and the snow! The first day we took a skiing class and we quickly got promoted, so we got to go further up the mountain with the instructer. The next day we skiied on our own and had a ton of fun! Here, just look at the pictures!!!

We had a blast! It was a much needed vacation together after we had been living apart due to my rotations for 6 weeks! It was only from Thursday to Sunday, but we made the most of it and had a blast skiing together. I will always laugh when I think of Lance going to fast that he skiied into the woods and fell in the soft snow. I enjoy making memories with Lance and maybe someday we will make memories in Winter Park with our kids.

So, I am officially in Longview for my pediatrics rotation. By the end of the week I was sick. I am surprised I lasted that long with all the kids that cough all over me. It has been fun and many people recognize me, which is kinda weird. Oh by the way, the pediatrician I am working with was Lance's pediatrician since he was a baby. Pretty weird, huh?

Saturday morning I made the long drive back to Houston to hang out with Lance. It was nice, but would have been much better if I wasn't sick. I was there a whole whopping 20 hours before having to return to Longview. Lance will be coming to Longview this weekend. We are going to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday.

End of OB/GYN

So I haven't updated in a while. The weekend before last we went to Marble Falls for a friend's wedding. It was beautiful out there! Lance and I went to Fredricksburg for the day and enjoyed the town. We also went to the famous Luckenbach, TX. It was so neat. It is seriously a small loop with a post office and a dance hall. That is it. Oh, and you buy beer at the post office! It is so neat. I will try and upload some pictures. The wedding was beautiful on the lake there, and we wish Aimee and Trey many wonderful years together.
On a totally different note, I delivered 2 babies last night!!! It was an awesome experience and I am so glad I was able to do that. They were delivered both within the first hour I was there, and then I studied the rest of the night waiting on more babies, but no more came. Lance knew I was going to have a hard time with the night shift, so I woke up to leave and he had a dozen roses, cinamon rolls, and a coke waiting for me. I actually was pretty awake all night. Maybe it was the adrenaline rush!

Now that it is more than halfway through the week, I thought I should write something. I decided to stay home from the game this weekend to work on my research paper. Hopefully I will get most or all of it done and not have to worry about it for the rest of this rotation.

Maggie has been funny lately. She would go over to the bath tub and start crying. Lance figured out that she wanted her water bowl filled, even though her water bowl isn't anywhere near the tub. Then yesterday she sat by the tub and cried so I checked her water bowl and sure enough she was out of water. She normally sits by her water bowl when she wants more water. oh well, I guess she is smart because she knows water comes out of the tub faucet.

I am on my lunch break right now. I have felt lots of babies in utero today. It is fun for the most part and exciting for the patient when I find the fetal heart rate and they get to listen to their baby. 98% of patients here speak spanish so I have been picking up more and more phrases.

Lance's birthday is Wednesday. He will be 24; one year away from 25-quarter of a century. Man, he's old. haha. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LANCE! I am so happy you are my husband and happy to celebrate another year with you! Hope it is the best year yet!


Yay! Another Aggie win. It might just be the last win. haha. We had fun. Ob/gyn is going well. I think I might be tired of it by the end of these 5 weeks, but then I get to do labor and delivery and that will definately be a new experience. I am definetly excited about the hours I work- 8-3. : ) Can't beat that!!! I have over an hour drive to Katy and back, though but I don't mind being HOME BY 5!!!! Especially after my first rotation of 7am to 9pm!!
That is all. We didn't take any pictures this weekend and I know I haven't posted pictures of last weekend, I just have better things to do like laundry right now.

YAY! I am officially done with block 1 of my rotations!!! Next is ob/gyn..... I am enjoying this friday off. Lance and I are going to a game night with his coworkers tonight and tomorrow is fighting Texas Aggie Football. I think it is fun to go and tailgate and this time I will take pictures. Yesterday Lance and I went out after dinner for some retail therapy! haha He has been going into work very early and working hard and I just finished my first block. I got a dress and shoes for a wedding in october and of course Lance got Aggie shirts. TJ Maxx was our best friend last night.

I wanted to get my hair cut today, but didn't exactly know what I wanted so I decided to wait. I don't want it short or anything. I also can see my pesky grey hairs and I am not sure what to do about that. I am 23 for goodness sake, am I supposed to be worrying about grey hair??? Anyway, I think there are only like 6 of them, but they stick out like a sore thumb in my dark brown hair. I just part my hair on the opposite side of my head for now!

Aggie football season is here!

Lance and I had a great time in College Station this past weekend. We always love going back to A&M and just walking around campus. Sadly, we brought the camera but didn't take any pictures. We decided to tailgate and had brisket, ribs, beans, corn casserole, and sweets. It was nice outside and we enjoyed chilling before the game. On the 19th we plan to tailgate again, but make something that doesn't take so long to cook. We will probably to hotdogs and hamburgers. We spent the night with my sister and went to church at A&M Church of Christ. We missed the church that we went to throughout college. We also did our premarital counseling there.

Thank goodness we both have labor day off and can do our grocery shopping for the week tomorrow and rest before our work week begins. I have a final in about a week and a half and I REALLY have to buckle down and study. I can't believe my first block of rotations is almost over. I am enjoying my current rotation and the freedom that it brings. I also like the interesting adn complicated cases that it brings. I also have done about 25 nasal swabs that came back positive for the flu, so I am bound to catch it. Good thing some places now have the flu shot out. I need to go get one.

After finally losing some of my "I am in PA school and all I do is sit on my butt and study" weight, I really pigged out this weekend!! oh well, I'll get back on my diet and back to working out. I still have quite a few pounds to lose. I am glad I was finally able to lose some weight at all. Lance has been working out too and doing the P90X. So, we will see in 3 months how that plays out!

Exciting news- Lance is now full time downtown. He is excited for the projects it could bring, but he has been working longer hours. I know he will also miss his work buddies. I am proud of him and I know he is excited to do something new. He is also getting excited for A&M football. We will be at the first home game next week. I plan to see my sister for a little bit of the time. She doesn't like football and works at the bookstore during the football games. We were excited to get Maggie back after her being gone for 3 weeks!!! We missed her.

The past week I was at my rotation with the Galveston County Health District. I have gotten to see some interesting things and my preceptor lets me do almost anything. The PAs there also have to act as social workers because the patients don't have insurance. The patients also can't get refered to specialists so the PAs there have to handle everything. We saw a 19 year old guy that shot himself in the face. He no longer had a nose and he couldn't see. Also, there are some STD cases as well as telling people they have HIV. I have also done lots of pap smears and taking stiches out and such. Most of the cases are emotionally tough and there is lots of patient education and counseling. I have learned lots in my first week and am excited to go back. At the end of this rotation I have a big final. I have been studying the cases I have seen, but I am not really sure how to approach studying for this final.

Hello all!
I just finished my rotation in Bay City. I stayed at free housing in West Columbia, a tiny town. I am so happy to sleep in my own bed. I did not sleep well there at all. There wasn't a deadbolt on the door and the front door was so thin and cracked you could see through it. I wish I didn't look under the kitchen sink, because I found mouse droppings. The place was disgusting, but hey it was free and it is now over with!!! I also went three weeks without television. I didn't really miss it at all; I got lots of studying done.

My rotation was in internal medicine. I loved it. I liked seeing the patients again and establishing a relationship with them. I got an awesome evaluation from the doctor and he even told me to call him when I get out of school for a job!!!!! He said the patients loved me! I don't think I could convince Lance to move out to Bay City, though! Tomorrow I turn in my paper on transient ischemic attacks and listen to presentations by other students.

My next rotation is with the Galveston County Health Department. I will be happy to be at home. I plan to exercise and eat well and hopefully lose a couple pounds.

Lance flew back to New Jersey this week. He will be back Thursday night because we have to travel to Longview and attend a wedding in Louisiana on Saturday. I hope the next time he goes to New Jersey I will be able to go up there for the weekend and visit New York City. I think it would be so much fun!

This past weekend my mom and sisters came to Houston to go shopping. We had fun and got some good deals. We had to make sure and eat at Gringo's. Lance went to West Point and sent me pictures. It looked so green there and pretty. He is enjoying being in New Jersey, and I know he wished I could have visited him this past weekend in New Jersey. I only have a week and a half left in this rotation and Lance should be back this weekend.

I think I am coming down with whatever Lance came down with a couple of weeks ago. Believe it or not, but Nasonex really works. I hate spraying that up my nose, though.

Anyway, this is just a quick update.

flying by

Life is starting to go by fast! Lance just got offered a different position at work, where he will be workin on a project that is in New Jersey. He was told on Friday, and this week he is flying out to New Jersey for a week and a half. I am so excited for him. He will also be working 2-3 days a week where he is now, and 2-3 days a week at a company downtown. He is excited to do something new and different. I don't think there could be a better time for him to take this opportunity because I am out of town for this whole month too. We just have to give away our Maggie for 3 weeks! I will miss Lance and Maggie!

I just finished my first week in Bay City and boy do I have stories! At first I felt pretty lonely out there because it is a small town and everybody knows everybody else. Every patient I see asks me where I am from. My preceptor is also the sheriff of the county and has the attack dog in his office. The first day when I walked in his office he was standing in front of the cage and told me not to look directly into his eyes. It was a little disturbing. Now, I am used to it. Everyone talks about their guns and 'so and so down the road.' I also see patients that were trampled by a bull and I have seen some nasty dog bites. Now that I am getting to know people I am enjoying chit chatting while I am doing their history and physical. They are so friendly.

I am also living in an OLD house in an even smaller town about 35 minutes from Bay City. There is no TV and I can get internet sometimes, but it cuts in and out all the time. I get lots of studying done when I get home. The neighbor seems to keep an eye out on the students.

Heres to two weeks without my husband or my dog. I think I will make it.

ONE ROTATION DOWN, TEN TO GO!

YAY! I have officially finished my first rotation. It is amazing how much you can learn in one month. I plan to take everything I learned in cardiology with me to my next rotation, internal medicine. I am happy to say I got a great evaluation and the Dr. told me I would be an asset to any clinic or hospital I plan to work at. He also said he would be happy to give me a recommendation if I wanted one later on.

My next rotation is in Bay City. I am moving out on Sunday. I am happy that I will be working regular clinic hours and I will be able to come home every weekend. This past rotation I worked 7am to 8 or 9pm, so 8-5 sounds nice. I will also be able to go back and study and work on my paper. I did not feel that I had time to study this past month because I felt sleep was more important!

Everything is going great with Lance. I actually got to go to his work and eat lunch with him. His boss told me that he is doing such a great job and he seemed proud of Lance and the things Lance had done in this past year. I am proud of him too!

Everything is going great. I enjoy interacting with patients and my first rotation proved to me that I have definately picked the right career for me!

Cardio

Another week of cardiology is done. I am learning a lot, but at times I still feel clueless. I still see patients by myself and report to the physician. I read stacks of EKGs, and at least he is impressed with my EKG reading skills. I have to work on my presentation that I will give in less than 2 weeks. I chose to do my presentation on Atrial Fibrillation because I have seen a couple of patients with it. We were on-call this weekend, but when I called in he said that I didn't need to be there, so I get the weekend off. I am still working from 7 am until 8 or 9pm. I decided I should wear a pedometer and see how far I walk in one day. I probably walk twice as far as needed because I get lost! haha. It would be easier if we only went to one hospital, but we go to two different ones with the cath lab on different floors in each and I get them mixed up.
I only see Lance one hour in the morning when we are both getting ready for our day, and then an hour at night before bed. It has been kinda hard on us. We have to log in the patients we see that day, so I spend some time doing that. I have not been able to study, and that is hard on me. I feel like I could learn so much more if I could read more about the diseases and conditions I see. Next month I will be living in Bay City and I think I am working in a clinic so hopefully I will have plenty of time to study in the evenings.

Absolute Exhaustion

I just finished my first week of my first clinical rotation. I have already learned to much. I am with a cardiologist. I show up at 7am at Clear Lake hospital and see patients, then around 11am we go to his office and see patients until around 6pm. We then go into Mainland hospital and see patients until 8-9pm. On the very first day I did not eat breakfast because I was nervous. It was so busy I only had half of a sandwich for lunch and by the time I got home around 9:30 I was so tired I just wanted to go to bed. So all ate the whole day was half a sandwich. I have been eating breakfast before I leave since then.

The very first patient the cardiologists gives me the chart and says, "here you go." I thought he would at least show me how he likes things done. I see the patient, do a history and physical, look up everything about the patient in the computer and come up with the assesment and plan for the patient. The doctor just signs off on my work.

I have got to help in cardioversion, heard every single murmur, bruits, done EKGS, interpreted stacks of EKGs, seen stents and pacemakers placed.
I am also learning about more drugs than we learned about in pharmacology and when to prescribe them.

Overall, I am enjoying my first rotation, but I am SO exhausted from the hours.
Lance took a picture on my first day. My pockets were stuffed with little books to help me out. I will have to post it when I have access to his camera.

DONE WITH DIDACTIC YEAR!

I just took my last exam of didactic year! yay! I then marched up to my professor's office and turned in our research proposal! Now, I hope I don't cry on my first day of rotations. I am to call the doctor I am with at 6:00 the morning of the first day and ask which hospital to meet him at! I am excited that I (we) have made it to this point. I feel like I know SO much, yet at the same time I feel that I have SO much more to learn.

This past weekend we flew to El Paso to visit Lance's grandmother. We painted the garage doors and some columns on the front of her house so she can sell her house. Lance said he had many good memories in her house and was sad that she was selling it. We ate lots of tamales, chicos tacos, enchiladas, and Lance had lots of menudo. We got back late on Sunday and picked Maggie up. We missed Maggie while we were gone.

Tomorrow we are heading to Longview. My mom had surgery and is recovering so I am going to see if there is anything she needs. Also, we hope to visit my grandparents. I don't know how crazy things will be clinical year and I don't know the next time we will be able to see any of our grandparents.

Lance and I have been reflecting alot lately and have come to the conclusion that we are very proud of the life we are building together. I can think of a better person to be my partner through life!

This past weekend we went to Tomball to swim and attend a graduation party for some friends of Lances. Sunday we went to church and the headed to Galveston to look at the sandcastles. They were neat. I think I could get used to the summer schedule for PA school. Before I know it I will be freaking out on rotations.

This weekend we are flying to El Paso to visit Lance's grandma.
I have an exam Friday before we leave. Hopefully that goes well.
I am trying to finish this research before we leave because the presentation and paper are due when we get back. I am having trouble filling out the IRB form in order for UTMB to approve us for research. It is alot of explaining yourself!

This morning I won a $50 off $100 purchase at Old Navy. I then refreshed the page so I could look for the coupon I really wanted, the $75 off $100 purchase. Little did I know that refreshing the page caused me to lose the coupon. By the time I could go back for the coupon I just lost, they were all gone!! Old Navy has this game you play every week to try and win these coupons. People stayed up all night waiting for the game to come up, and I just happened to be on the page at the time it opened this morning. I can't believe I had the coveted coupon and lost it that easily. Oh well, I guess half of the fun is in the hunt!

Summer session is flying by! I really need to get going on my research. The proposal and presentation is due in a couple of weeks.

We drove lots this past weekend and plan to stay here for this coming up weekend. Maggie is happy to be back at home, too!

Lance has been working late this week. It figures that the week I am home from school early, Lance has to work late. oh well, I guess that's how it goes sometimes.

In other news, I had my skills exam today. I now can put a catheter in you keeping sterility, need an NG tube? I'll put it in. How about a TB test, tetanus shot, or an insulin injection? I got ya covered. We also had to clean wounds. Can you believe on the very fist day of PA school we were sticking each other in the arm trying to draw blood???? That was a very memorable experience!

CELEBRATION

This past weekend Lance and I headed out to San Antonio to celebrate being married for one year. We arrived to champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! Friday night we ate dinner overlooking the sunset of the hill country. It was beautiful! Lance ate antelope and I had buffalo. We discussed what we thought we did well for our first year in marriage and what we hoped to change. Before we knew it we had been to dinner for 2 1/2 hours. Lance got cherry chocolate bread pudding and I got creme brule for dessert. It was heavenly.
Saturday morning we hiked along the hill country and hung out by the pool the rest of the day. We got dressed and went to the Riverwalk to eat dinner.
This morning we slept in and then headed back to Houston. We had a great time in San Antonio and I feel blessed that Lance planned the trip to show his love for me. If the first year of being married is supposed to be the hardest, I think we are in for a wonderful lifetime with each other. We had a GREAT first year of marriage.

I plan to add pictures when I get the chance. I have a crazy week ahead of me. Tomorrow I take the PACKRAT which is the practice board exam. Tuesday I have ACLS class all day and on Thursday wish me luck because I have my OSCE. This is like a real life pop quiz with a simulated patient. I have to pass it in order to go on to clinicals.

On our trip we were approached by a couple and they asked us if we were honeymooning. When we said we were celebrating our first anniversary, they said "Keep it up!" This leaves me wondering, When are we not newlyweds anymore? Is the first anniversary the end to being newlyweds, or maybe when you have kids. Let me know what you think!

College Station

We had a great time in College Station this weekend. We got to hang out with my sister and her boyfriend. Eat lunch with some great friends, and I attended a bridal shower for one of my friends. I can't believe that I haven't seen these people in a year! Since my WEDDING! I am kind of sad that PA school did that to me. I hope the worse is over and I can keep better track of everyone.

Lance is currently in Louisiana for a few days so that leaves me lots of time to study for my final on Friday! We are excited to be heading to San Antonio this coming up weekend to celebrate the first year of our marriage!

Swine Flu

H1N1 is called the "Swine flu" here. The media has totally blown up this issue. Just keep in mind that over 700 Americans die every week from the flu. No, not the "swine flu," but that average seasonal flu that we are used to having. The flu that we are used to having is resistant to Tamiflu. The "Swine flu," however is not resistant at all meaning that there is some sort of treatment that can be used for this virus. Yes, this is a new virus that we don't have immunity to yet, but we do have immunity to other influenza A viruses.

You cannot get the "swine flu" from eating pork. Remember that we get the flu from other people coughing and sneezing in close contact with us. This flu is no different.

Wash your hands and stay away from people who are sick. If you get a fever and body aches call your doctor. Most importantly, don't panic!

PS. The little boy that died of the swine flu here in Houston was from Mexico City. He was visiting family or friends in Brownsville, Texas where he started getting sick. He was admitted to Texas Children's hospital here in Houston when he was in serious condition. He had previous health problems that made his susceptible to any kind of illness. None of his family members are sick.

Flooding!

Two weekends ago we had a huge thunderstorm come through Houston. We watched the parking lot to our apartment flood. Then, the fire alarm started going off. I though OH GREAT! Where are we going to go? So, we drove in Lance's truck to the front office and learned that there wasn't a fire, they just couldn't get the alarm to go off. The street we live on was flooded and there were two girls sitting in the front office. Their car was drowning in front of them. Lance offered to help push their car out of the water. As Lance walks out there in the pouring rain, the water goes up all the way to his waist! He helps push the car and then realizes that the water was almost up to his doors on his Ford 150 4X4 truck! The creek beside our apartment flooded along with the water retention pond across the street flooding the road we live on and the interstate.

Fast forward to this past Saturday. Lance and I decided to go to Katy and watch a movie with friends. My car didn't have gas so we decided to just take Lance's truck. After the movie we go back to their house and saw on the news that Southeast Houston was flooding. I said we need to get home. As we arrive closer to our apartment the interstate was shut down and we could already see lots of cars stalled trying to go down the road we live on. It was about 11 at night. We parked in the Walmart parking lot and just waited. The rain let up and when it was about 12:15 I said lets go! And Lance said okay..... Thank goodness we were in Lance's truck because the water did get into his doors. We waited in a line of cars that were blocked because of all the stalled cars in the standing water. After waiting about 30 minutes Lance decides to jump the curb, drive down the median passing the stalled cars and turn into our apartment complex. We got to bed finally at 1:00 am. If we were in my car we would have had to spend the night in my car in the Walmart parking lot!

So today I am studying and I see that we are now in ANOTHER flood and tornado watch!!!! Lance is currently in Louisiana finishing up a project. He plans to leave soon. I hope he travels safely. He is in a small rental car so if our road is flooded, which it will be, he won't be able to get back. I guess I can get in the truck and pick him up at Walmart! Needless to say, Lance and I decided that we are NOT going to live in Friendswood when we move!

Amy: Well, I just put the meatloaf in the oven.
Lance: (In a hurried voice) Okay. I'm on my way home right now.

After every block I have to return to UTMB to take an exam. That is why there are a couple of days not accounted for between the rotations. I am really getting thrown in there starting with cardiology!!! I am excited though, I just wish I had primary or internal medicine before cardiology.

EDIT: I now have housing in Bay City. I am being housed by AHEC. They house medical and PA students in the area.

3 finals DOWN!

I survived my 3 finals. I know I got As in the first two classes, but am on the line for the third. I don't know when my grade will come in for that. I feel that the more patients I see the less nervous I am and the more natural the history and physical go. I still have my presentation this afternoon and my write-up to do, but it has been getting easier every time I have to do them.

I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend with Lance. I abandoned him last weekend to study so I am excited to spend lots of time with him. Poor Lance. I am thankful for a supportive husband.

Mom called me this week and told me Dillards called her to tell her that we had a Wedding gift to pick up. Come to find out Dillards had stashed a gift in their storage room for almost a year now!!! A sweet older couple bought us a nice griddle and never got a Thank You note for it because we didn't receive the gift. I can't believe that Dillards had kept the gift that long without even notifiying me. Oh well, it makes for a nice anniversary gift.

I've decided to start a blog. With our crazy busy lives right now, I hope to make time to update this so others can keep up with our lives!

Just to update you:

Amy- Please pray for me to get through these 3 finals this next week. I also have my last patient write-up to do. These are typically 18-22 pages long and take me hours to complete.

Lance-Pray that he will continue to enjoy his job. Pray for his patience with me. (I typed patients first...oh PA school.)
